What do Circuit Judges do?
The Kentucky Circuit Court is the state’s highest trial court and has general jurisdiction over many types of cases:
Civil matters: Cases involving more than $5,000
Criminal matters: Capital offenses, felonies and information cases
Appeals from District Court cases
*Family matters: Dissolution of marriage, child custody, visitation, maintenance, and child
support, and equitable distribution of property in dissolution cases are heard by Family
Court Circuit Judges or by other Circuit Court Judges if Family Court Judges cannot
hear them.
Felony offenses are crimes that are punishable by 1 year up to life in prison, or death.
Capital Offense Penalties:
Death or life without possibility of probation or parole or life without parole for 25 years or 20 to 50 years.
